Calgary Immigrant Seniors’ Website Initiative

The Calgary Immigrant Seniors’ Website Initiative is a multi-agency committee which was created in response to the findings of the Electronic Media Project completed in 2005. The purpose of the project was to research the use of electronic media in the provision of information specifically to seniors from diverse cultures. Many agencies deal with immigrant information and referral; many other agencies deal with seniors’ information but very often the immigrant senior falls somewhere in between. The immigrant senior is in a unique position, requiring information on benefits, community resources and health issues which apply neither to the younger immigrant nor the longer term resident senior. The Electronic Media Project reached the conclusion that the most cost effective way to impact the largest number of these diverse seniors and their families was not radio or television but the internet, especially if some of the resources provided could be translated.

In April, 2007 the Calgary Immigrant Seniors’ Website Initiative received funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada to build the website www.immigrantseniors.ca:
